Case/context:
Anuol Payam in Lakes State has been engrossed in conflict with its neighbors from the neighboring Central and Western Equatoria States for many years. The ranging conflicts hurt the trust and social fabric between the communities and led to disruption of livelihoods. Most of the people affected where women and children
Nyamlual Ruei Mayen is a 34-year old mother of three children from Angai Boma. She is one of the 12 members of agricultural group of Anuol called Atungbor.
When Angai was destroyed by the conflict in early 2021, Nyamlual thought her life ends there when she lost her footstock. With the help of the Salaam Junub and UNDP through provision of seeds and tools, Nyamlual was able to farm and is now able to provide for her family needs.
Before the intervention:
The inter-communal clashes in Anuol had led to constant fear that people like Nyamlual did not concentrate on agriculture which is their major source of food and income. Women headed households were severely affected. Being a woman doing everything on her own, Nyamlual was left with no hope as she fears the recurrence of violence.
“TTT has brought peace for us women especially in Anuol Payam that was destroyed by clashes in 2021. Salaam Junub has washed away all hatred fights and we reconciled. Because of the stability and Salaam Junub support, I have four bags of groundnuts this year”, Nyamlual Ruei Mayen
Nature of intervention:
Salaam Junub conducted Take Tea Together as a free space for communities to discuss their differences and find solution for calm to return. Once there was stability, Salaam Junub supported groups of vulnerable people like Nyamlual with agricultural tools and seeds.
After the intervention:
Members of the group were able to cultivate and increase their production. They earned up to four bags of groundnuts in the previous season and working even harder now to further increase their production.
